- 3gp is a file format which is used in mobile phones to store media (audio/video).
- AAC (.aac) - "Advanced Audio Coding", next generation audio codec developed by Fraunhofer that seeks to preserve audio quality at lower bitrates.
- AC3 - AC3 file, a Dolby Digital audio file, can be found as the standard audio track on Digital Versatile Discs (DVD) and High Definition Television (HDTV). This coder has been designed to take maximum advantage of human auditory masking in that it divides the audio spectrum of each channel into narrow frequency bands of different sizes optimized with respect to the frequency selectivity of human hearing. This makes it possible to sharply filter coding noise so that it is forced to stay very close in frequency to the frequency components of the audio signal being coded. By reducing or eliminating coding noise wherever there are no audio signals to mask it, the sound quality of the original signal can be subjectively preserved.
- AIFF (.aiff) - default sound file on Macintosh computers. AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format.
- ADPCM - Compressed WAV format. ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) is an audio compression scheme which compresses from 16-bit to 4-bit for a 4:1 compression ratio.
- ALAW - Compressed WAV format. A-Law (or CCITT standard G.711) is an audio compression scheme common in telephony applications.
- ALF2CD - Compressed WAV format. ACM codec developed by the NCT Company. Good for keeping of CD-quality music.
- Apple Lossless - Encoding (also known as Apple Lossless, Apple Lossless Audio Codec or ALE) is a lossless audio codec developed by Apple Computer to provide full, CD-quality audio in about half the space of the original file.
- Ambient Light - Light that is uniform throughout a scene.
- Analog Sound - Waveforms, with valleys and ridges, referring to the natural form of sound/audio. To store/playback on a computer, analog data is converted to digital data.
- Animated GIFs - A special kind of web animation done through programs such as Flash, Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks. Animation created by displaying frames of graphics one after the other in quick succession to give the appearance of movement.
- Animation - A moving graphic.
- Apple Video Player - Software that allows you to record and play QuickTime movies.
- ASF - a proprietary streaming format developed by Microsoft that provides streaming media services for the Windows Media framework.
