What is MP3?

MP3 is a revolutionary digital audio format developed by Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Thompson Multimedia in the late 1980s and brought to the mainstream through the Internet in 1997. MP3 is short for MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) Layer - 1 , the group that help make MP3 an international standard.MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3. Compression scheme used to transfer audio files via the Internet and store in portable players and digital audio servers.

MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio layer 3. MP3 is the file extension for MPEGaudio layer 3. Layer 3 is one of three coding schemes (layer 1, layer 2 and layer 3) for the compression of audio signals. Layer 3 uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (more specifically, the redundant and irrelevant parts of a sound signal. The stuff the human ear doesn't hear anyway). ...

The most popular CODEC (for compressor-decompressor) software that shrinks music into digital files small enough for transmission over the Internet. The MP3 format strips away layers of inaudible sounds, compresses what is left, then decompresses those same files for listening on a computer or audio player. MP3 is "open source" software, in the public domain and freely available on the Internet.

What has become the standard file format for the compression of music. Because MP3s significantly compress songs, it is a perfect candidate for distributing on the internet. It is clearly a standard online format and has resulted in the creation of dozens of software tools (like Napster and Gnutella) that encourage MP3 sharing/copying via the web.(MPEG Audio Layer 3) An audio compression technology that is part of the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 specifications. MP3 compresses CD-quality sound by factor twelve, while still maintaining high fidelity. MP3 music files are played via software or a handheld device. MP3 has made it feasible to download quality audio from the Web very quickly.

MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2) Layer 3 audio encoding (it is not an acronym for MPEG3). MP3 is a popular compression format used for audio files on computers and portable devices. The compression in MP3 works on the basis of a "psychoacoustic model" which means that parts of the audio that human ears cannot detect are discarded by the encoder. Although this is a LOSSY process, it can yield very high quality audio files are relatively high compression rates. ...

An increasingly popular way to store audio in electronic format. The MP3 format compresses audio files in such a way that the file size is relatively small, but the song sounds nearly perfect. You can identify MP3 files because they end in the ".mp3" extension. Typically 1 MB is equal to one minute of music or several minutes for spoken word/audiobooks.MPEG Layer 3 Format for compressing audio only defined in both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. Commonly used for digital music played on personal computers (MP3 songs) but also targeted at applications such as digital phones and new hardware MP3 players intended as discman or car CD player replacements.
